Luton Airport to London: train, coach or private transfer
Getting from Luton Airport to London is the one London airport journey where the train does not start at the terminal. The airport lies about 35 miles north of central London, and the first leg is a shuttle called the Luton DART. That small extra step turns an obvious decision into an arithmetic problem, especially if there are three of you and a pile of checked bags.
This guide lays out what each route costs and how long it takes, using the airport’s and the operators’ own published figures.
The short answer
| Option | Time to central London | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luton Airport Express (EMR) | 22 minutes to St Pancras, non-stop, every 30 minutes | From £10.00 advance, plus the DART | Solo travellers in a hurry |
| Thameslink | 24–45 minutes, up to 8 trains an hour, runs all night | From £6.50 advance, plus the DART | Farringdon, Blackfriars, London Bridge, City Thameslink |
| Luton DART shuttle | Under 4 minutes, terminal to Luton Airport Parkway | £4.90 adult, £2.45 child aged 5–15, under-5s free | Mandatory for any rail journey |
| National Express / Green Line 757 coach | 60–90 minutes, every 15–30 minutes, 24/7 | From £9.50 one way | Budget travel; stops right outside the terminal |
| Private transfer | About an hour off-peak, door to door | Fixed at booking | Groups, families, very early departures and late arrivals |
The train: fast, but count the DART
The Luton DART is the automated shuttle between the terminal and Luton Airport Parkway station. It covers 2.3 km in under four minutes and runs 24 hours a day: every 4 minutes at peak (06:00–09:30 and 14:00–18:00), every 7 minutes off-peak, and 4 to 6 times an hour between 22:00 and 04:00. The adult single is £4.90, the child single (ages 5 to 15) £2.45, and under-5s travel free. One booking tip worth more than any of those numbers: buy your rail ticket to “London Luton Airport” rather than to “Luton”, and the DART is included in the through fare. Book to “Luton” and you pay for the shuttle separately.
From Parkway you have two operators:
Luton Airport Express, run by East Midlands Railway, is non-stop to St Pancras International in 22 minutes, every 30 minutes, with advance fares from £10.00 excluding the DART. First train around 05:45 on weekdays, last around 23:51.
Thameslink is the frequent option: up to 8 trains an hour, services through the night, and direct trains to St Pancras, Farringdon, City Thameslink, Blackfriars and London Bridge. Journey times run 24 to 45 minutes depending on the service, with advance fares from £6.50 excluding the DART. Trains continue south to East Croydon, Gatwick, Brighton and beyond.
The airport’s own headline figure, 32 minutes from St Pancras to the terminal, already includes the DART leg. Add up to 10 trains an hour at peak, and the rail link is genuinely good. Thameslink also sells a group ticket at a third off for 3 to 9 adults travelling together.
The coach: slower, cheaper, and it stops at the door
Coaches drop you right outside the terminal building, which is the one thing rail cannot do here.
National Express runs 24/7, three times an hour during the day and every 30 minutes overnight, on three routes: the A1 to Victoria Coach Station (up to 13 a day, via Golders Green, Baker Street, Portman Square and Marble Arch), the A2 to Paddington (up to 31 a day, via Golders Green, Finchley Road & Frognal, St John’s Wood and Baker Street) and the A31, also to Victoria Coach Station (up to 15 a day). Published fares on the London route start at £9.50 one way.
Green Line 757 runs to London Victoria every 30 minutes by day and hourly through the night, seven days a week, calling at Brent Cross, Finchley Road, Baker Street, Marble Arch and Hyde Park Corner.
Between the two operators, a coach leaves every 15 to 30 minutes around the clock, and the journey takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. That range is the whole story: the coach shares the M1 with everyone else.
National Express fares quoted are correct as published on 13 July 2026 for travel between 13 July and 9 November 2026.
The private transfer: one leg, and the DART arithmetic
A booked car takes about an hour to central London outside peak hours at a price fixed at booking. Pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting from your booked pickup time, and you can message the driver in the LocalsRide chat if your flight is late, which at Luton matters more than at most airports: the kerbside zone is charged by the minute and a driver improvising outside runs up a bill.
Now the arithmetic people skip. Rail from Luton is not one fare, it is two:
- One adult, hand luggage: DART £4.90 + Thameslink from £6.50 = from £11.40. The train wins easily.
- Two adults, checked bags: from £22.80 in fares, plus whatever gets you from St Pancras to your actual address, with two changes and a lift to find.
- Three or four people: £14.70–£19.60 of the fare is the DART, however you book it. Against one fixed-price car for the whole party with no changes, the comparison is closer than the single fare suggests.
None of that makes the train a bad choice. For one person travelling light it is clearly the right answer. It is an argument for comparing the total for your party rather than the headline single fare.
The M1, and when the drive goes wrong
The route is essentially the M1, and it is predictable until it is not. Off-peak, central London takes around an hour. The stretch between junctions 10 and 6a is the section that decides your day: at its worst southbound into London on weekday mornings, and northbound out of London on Friday afternoons. The same journey that takes 55 minutes at 11:00 on a Sunday can take 90 at 08:00 on a Tuesday.
Two practical consequences:
- Departing: build the margin into your pickup time. The distance is fixed; the duration is not.
- Arriving: it matters less, because the driver comes for the pickup time you booked and the traffic is their problem.
Destinations north and west of London, among them St Albans, Milton Keynes, Oxford and Cambridge, are frequently quicker from Luton than from Heathrow or Gatwick. Worth knowing when you book the flight, not just after you land.
The airport lands at awkward hours, so book earlier
This is a low-cost and leisure airport, and its schedule shows it. Departures start around six in the morning, which puts a wave of passengers into the terminal between three and five. Arrivals on leisure routes cluster late into the evening. Demand for ground transport concentrates in exactly the hours when fewest drivers are working, so same-day availability at 04:00 in July is not something to rely on. Coaches and Thameslink both run overnight; a car is the one that needs booking ahead.
If someone is meeting you by car
The Drop Off and Pick Up Zone is a five-minute walk from the terminal and costs £9 for up to 12 minutes, then £1 per minute to a 30-minute maximum. It is barrierless and cashless: cameras read the plate and you pay online by midnight the following day. Overstay the 30 minutes and it is a £95 enforcement charge, reduced to £55 within 14 days.
The free alternative is the Long Stay car park, free for two hours, with a free shuttle every 20 minutes, running 24 hours a day, about a ten-minute ride. Three hours costs £7. For a pickup, where your wait depends on a passport queue you cannot see, this is the option to use.
Two things to know. Blue Badge holders are not exempt in the main drop-off zone; the concession is 30 minutes free in Terminal Car Park 1 instead. And stopping on the approach roads is not permitted at all.
