Manchester Airport to city centre: train, tram, bus or car

DestinationsPublished

Manchester Airport sits south of the city: Manchester Piccadilly station is 12.8 km away in a straight line, and the drive from the terminals is about 15–16 km on OpenStreetMap routing. You can cover that by train, tram, bus, taxi or booked car. The best choice depends mostly on the day and the hour you land.

This guide uses figures from the airport, National Rail, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), the train operators and Manchester City Council. Every timetable figure below is given for the days it was checked, because Sundays and nights at Manchester are different from the rest of the week.

The short answer

Two terminals and one station

Manchester has been a two-terminal airport since March 2026, when Terminal 1 closed for good. The airport’s own rule of thumb: Ryanair flies from Terminal 3, every other airline from Terminal 2.

Trains, trams, buses and coaches all leave from The Station, the transport hub between the two terminals. It is open 24 hours a day and is linked to both terminals by the covered Skylink walkways, with lifts, escalators and moving walkways. The airport gives the walk as about 10 minutes from Terminal 2 and about 5 minutes from Terminal 3. The Metrolink stop is part of the same station.

Train to Manchester Piccadilly

On the dates we checked in National Rail’s journey planner, direct trains from the airport to Piccadilly were run by TransPennine Express, Northern and Transport for Wales (on Sunday 1 November, only the first two). Most took 13 to 22 minutes. Here is what the planner showed:

  • Weekdays (Monday 12, Wednesday 7 and Friday 9 October) and Saturday 10 October: between 06:00 and 22:00, six to eight trains an hour. The last evening train left at 23:46.
  • Overnight: TransPennine Express introduced an hourly overnight service between the airport and Piccadilly in May 2026. On the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday we checked, trains left at 00:38, 01:14, 01:50 and then roughly hourly until morning. Early on Monday 12 October there was a gap between 00:38 and 03:59.
  • Sundays (18 and 25 October, 1 November): one to six trains an hour, the first at 07:37 and the last at 23:36. On each of these Sundays, the planner showed no direct train between the last Saturday train at 23:46 and the 07:37.

Fares. For an adult, the planner gave an Anytime Day Single of £6.20 and an Off-Peak Day Single of £5.20. On weekdays the Off-Peak fare was not offered on departures from 03:21 to 09:29 or from 16:04 to 18:29 (from 03:59 on Monday). On Saturday it was offered on every train. Advance Singles were cheaper on some trains. You can buy tickets on the day from the machines or the rail information desk at the station.

If your flight is late. The airport suggests building in extra time. It notes that some operators, TransPennine Express for example, let you take another service up to 3 hours later if you miss your train. It still advises checking the policy with the operator you are travelling with.

After 25 October. The clock change does not bring a new rail timetable. National Rail’s current timetable runs until Saturday 12 December 2026. The planner showed the same pattern on Wednesday 28 and Saturday 31 October as on the October dates above.

The tram runs on TfGM’s Manchester Airport – Victoria service. In the city centre it calls at Deansgate-Castlefield, St Peter’s Square, Market Street, Shudehill and Victoria. TfGM gives 52 minutes to St Peter’s Square and 60 minutes to Victoria. The tram is much slower than the train, but useful if you are staying near one of those stops.

Works from 19 October to 1 November. The airport says major Metrolink improvement works run from Monday 19 October to Sunday 1 November, and that trams on the Manchester Airport line terminate at Firswood during them; TfGM’s timetable data for those two weeks shows no tram from the airport beyond Firswood. In those two weeks the train or the 43 bus takes you into the centre without a change. Check TfGM’s travel updates before you travel.

Frequency. Under TfGM’s timetable from 14 September 2026, trams run every 15 minutes, with extra peak-time trams on some busier sections. TfGM’s timetable data shows trams leaving the airport 15 minutes apart through the day on the dates we checked. The airport’s tram page still says every 12 minutes, which is out of date; TfGM says it is working to return to a 12/6-minute frequency in the future.

First and last trams to St Peter’s Square, from TfGM’s first and last tram finder and its timetable data:

  • Monday to Thursday: first at 05:45, last direct tram at 23:15.
  • Friday and Saturday: first at 05:45, last at 00:15 (just after midnight).
  • Sunday: first at 06:45, last direct tram at 23:15.

These are the times before the works. For dates after 1 November, check TfGM’s first and last tram finder.

Fares. The airport is in zone 4 and the city centre in zone 1, and your ticket must be valid for every zone you travel through, so a ride into the centre needs an all-zones (1+2+3+4) ticket: £4.60 for an adult single. Shorter rides along the line cost from £1.40. Tap in and out with a contactless card or phone, or buy a ticket from the machine on the platform. You cannot buy tickets on the tram.

Buses, including through the night

The airport calls its city bus link a 24-hour Bee Network bus service. Route 43 leaves The Station for Piccadilly Gardens. According to TfGM’s timetable data:

  • Weekdays: about every 10 minutes in the middle of the day, every 30 minutes through the night; 48 to 82 minutes to Piccadilly Gardens.
  • Saturday: about every 10 minutes from late morning to late afternoon, every 30 minutes through the night; 48 to 73 minutes.
  • Sunday: about every 15 minutes in the middle of the day, every 30 minutes through the night; 48 to 65 minutes.

These timetables are the same for the weeks either side of 25 October. Route 103 also goes to Piccadilly Gardens. It is slower, at 54 to 96 minutes, and on the dates we checked its last bus left shortly after midnight.

Fare. A Bee Network single costs £2 for an adult. You can tap a contactless card when you board, and you can change to another Bee Network bus within 60 minutes at no extra cost.

The 43 matters most early on a Sunday morning, when there is no train between 23:46 on Saturday and 07:37 on Sunday.

Is there a free bus? Not to the city centre. The only free transport on the airport’s pick-up and drop-off pages is the shuttle from the free drop-off area in JetParks 1, and it only goes one way: from the car park to the terminals.

Coaches. National Express, Megabus and FlixBus also use The Station, but they are long-distance services. National Express route 172 to Newcastle calls at Manchester Coach Station on Chorlton Street, so check its timetable for your day if that suits your hotel.

Taxis: metered under the council’s tariff

The airport says licensed black cabs wait at ranks outside both terminals (its taxi page also mentions a rank at The Station). The whole fleet is wheelchair accessible, and each taxi takes at least five passengers with luggage. Cards are accepted with no added fees, and you don’t need to book.

How the fare works. Manchester City Council sets the maximum taxi fares, which have applied since 15 September 2023. The meter must be on for journeys that start in the city and end in Greater Manchester less than four miles beyond the city boundary. The airport and the city centre are both inside the City of Manchester (we checked on OpenStreetMap), so a ride to the centre goes on the meter.

  • Day rate, 6am to 10pm: £3.40 for the first 348 metres, then 20p for every 123 metres or part of it.
  • Night rate, 10pm to 6am and all day on bank holidays: £3.80 for the first 211 metres, then 20p for every 92.5 metres.
  • Airport extras: a £1.80 barrier charge for a pick-up at any terminal, and 20p for each passenger after the first.

The council’s fares page gives no fare to the city centre. Its own examples show £29.20 by day and £38.00 at night for a 10-mile trip, not counting waiting time. By road it is about 15–16 km (9.3 to 9.9 miles) from the pick-up areas to the centre on OpenStreetMap routing.

Private hire cars, Uber included, pick up elsewhere: the airport says all private hire operators collect passengers from the Express Pick Up areas at Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.

If someone is collecting you

There are no payment barriers in the pick-up and drop-off zones. You pay online or by phone by midnight the following day, or set up AutoPay in advance; cash is not accepted.

  • Express Pick Up, Terminal 2 or Terminal 3: £6.60 for up to 15 minutes. Overstay and there is a £60 charge. At Terminal 2, follow the signs for P3.
  • Picking up in a Drop Off zone brings a £100 charge.
  • Unpaid visits bring a £100 Parking Charge Notice, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

Going back to the airport

Terminals 2 and 3 have the same drop-off charges: £5.50 for 5 minutes, £6.50 for 10 minutes and £25 for up to 30 minutes, paid the same way. The free drop-off area is in JetParks 1, with a free shuttle bus to the terminals that runs 24/7 and takes about 6 minutes. Blue Badge holders can use the terminal forecourts free of charge for drop-off only.

Choosing by situation

  • One or two people, Monday to Saturday, staying near Piccadilly: the train. It is the quickest of the public options.
  • Staying near St Peter’s Square, Market Street or Victoria and in no hurry: the tram takes you there without a change, except from 19 October to 1 November.
  • Landing on a Sunday before 07:37, or in the gaps in the night trains: the 43 bus, a taxi from the rank, or a car booked in advance.
  • A family or group with several cases: compare per-person tickets with one vehicle for everyone, door to door.

The private transfer

On LocalsRide you enter the airport, your address, the date and time and the number of passengers. Local drivers send offers showing the vehicle and a price, with a star rating from past passengers once the driver has completed rides. You choose one and pay by card online when you accept it. The price of the accepted offer does not change.

The driver comes for the pickup time you booked, and airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting from then. A long delay can use that time up, so if your flight is late, message your driver in the LocalsRide chat. If you ask for a name sign, each offer shows whether the driver will meet you with one. Child seats and a note about your luggage go in your request, so drivers see them before they make an offer, and each offer’s details show the vehicle’s luggage capacity.

A booked car makes most sense when the public options are weakest: early on a Sunday morning, in the gaps between night trains, or with a family’s worth of suitcases and an address away from a station or tram stop.

Checking a transfer for your date

Whether you get offers depends on the drivers available on your date. Enter your landing time and your Manchester address and see what offers arrive before you count on a car, then compare them with the train, tram and bus times above for your day. Driver offers for the airport are on our Manchester Airport transfer page, and for trips around the city see Manchester transfers.
