Is Liberia city worth a stop or should I go straight to the beach?

Liberia has a small colonial centre and decent hotels but is primarily a regional capital — most LIR arrivals skip the city and go direct to the coast. Exception: very late arrivals where an onward transfer would arrive past midnight — an overnight in Liberia makes sense before continuing in daylight.

Do I need a 4x4 SUV from LIR to Nosara or Santa Teresa?

Yes — Nosara and Santa Teresa use partly unpaved Nicoya Peninsula roads and rainy-season (May–Nov) mud can stop sedans. Paved beach destinations (Papagayo, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal, Coco, Hermosa) don't need 4x4. Dry season (Dec–Apr) sedans sometimes reach Nosara but SUV is safer.
