Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (IATA: LIR) is Costa Rica's Pacific-north gateway, 12 kilometres west of Liberia city on the Pan-American Highway. LIR opened its current international terminal in 2012 and has grown rapidly as a direct-to-beach alternative to SJO — most US and Canadian gateway cities (Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Newark, Toronto) run direct flights to LIR, avoiding the long central-highland drive from SJO to the Guanacaste coast. Transfer times to the main beach destinations are short: Papagayo 30 to 45 minutes, Playas del Coco 25 to 40 minutes, Tamarindo 1 to 1.5 hours, Playa Conchal 55 to 80 minutes. LIR operates during scheduled flight hours — typically 05:00 to 23:30 — rather than true 24/7 because the flight bank is dominated by daytime charter and scheduled routes from North America. Late-night diversions are possible but not the norm. Airport taxi availability follows the schedule; a pre-booked private transfer guarantees a vehicle.

Can I book a LIR to Nicaragua transfer?

Yes — LIR to the Peñas Blancas border is 65 km north on the Pan-American, about 1 hour. Through-booking to San Juan del Sur, Granada or Managua needs coordination with a Nicaraguan-side driver — Costa Rican vehicles can't freely continue. Standard: LIR to border on the CR side, pedestrian clearance, separate Nicaraguan driver on the far side.
