Palanga International Airport (PLQ) is Lithuania's third international airport and the gateway to the country's Baltic coast, 5 kilometres north of Palanga town and 30 kilometres north-west of Klaipėda. Its schedule is strongly seasonal. The June-to-September peak brings direct scheduled and charter routes from Hamburg, Oslo, London Stansted, Dublin, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Warsaw, Amsterdam and other European cities, while the winter months from November to March thin out to a handful of scheduled routes plus the odd charter. The compact single terminal handles the summer peak well, and the Saturday-rotation crush common at pure charter airports is less pronounced here because the traffic mix leans more on scheduled operators.

PLQ exists to serve the Baltic coast tourism economy. Palanga is the country's main beach-resort town; Klaipėda, 30 kilometres south, is the main port city and the gateway to the Curonian Spit via the Smiltynė ferry; and Nida, at the southern end of the Lithuanian stretch of the Spit, is 80 kilometres away including the crossing. The quieter coastal town of Šventoji lies 8 kilometres north of Palanga. Inland, Kretinga monastery is a 17 km drive (25 to 35 minutes), Žemaitija National Park around 75 km and 1.5 hours, Kaunas 245 km and 3 to 3.5 hours, and Vilnius 340 km and 4 to 4.5 hours. Riga, across the border in Latvia, is 295 km and 3.5 to 4 hours.

At the Airport

The single terminal is compact and Baltic-coast modest, with arrivals and ground transport about a 40-metre walk apart. Wi-Fi is free, currency exchange is unnecessary in a euro country, and SIM-card vendors in arrivals sell tourist packages. There is a small café, limited duty-free and no Priority Pass lounge. The taxi rank outside runs regulated tariffs that are reasonable for the short Palanga run, and Bolt operates here, though driver numbers thin out between flight banks. Car rental is widely available and the well-kept road network makes self-driving the coast easy. For anyone continuing to the Curonian Spit or Nida, a pre-booked multi-day driver smooths the ferry and national-park logistics.

Is PLQ viable as the entry point for a Baltic states circuit?
For a Lithuania-centred trip, very much so. PLQ on the coast is a natural start for Palanga, the Curonian Spit and Klaipėda before heading inland to Vilnius. On a broader three-state circuit through Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, arriving at PLQ folds in a coastal day or two that a direct Vilnius arrival would only reach by an overland detour, and the onward run to Riga takes 3.5 to 4 hours by road. A single multi-country driver across the three states is rarely practical, since each country uses separate operators and the capital-to-capital rail and bus links are efficient, so the usual pattern is a pre-booked transfer at each arrival with separate intercity transport between countries.
Is Nida a better base than Palanga for a Curonian Spit-focused trip?
Yes. Nida, 80 kilometres south of PLQ including the Klaipėda-Smiltynė ferry, is the Spit's main settlement and the better base for a trip built around the UNESCO dunes and scenery rather than Palanga's beach-resort buzz. It has a quieter character, with traditional fishermen's cottages, the Thomas Mann House museum and the Parnidis dune, the country's highest active dune. The transfer from PLQ takes 2 to 2.5 hours including the ferry, so most travellers stay two to four nights to make it worthwhile. Basing in Palanga with a Nida day trip is the alternative, but it gives a thinner taste of the Spit.
Can a driver handle the Klaipėda-Smiltynė car ferry crossing for a Curonian Spit trip?
Yes. The Smiltynė passenger-and-car ferry from Klaipėda's New Harbour runs every 15 to 30 minutes year-round, at about EUR 4 per passenger and EUR 12 to 15 for a small car plus its passengers. A pre-booked driver handles the queue, the payment and the 10-minute crossing as part of the full Curonian Spit transfer. Booking ahead is not usually needed except on peak summer weekends, when arriving early avoids car queues of 30 to 60 minutes.
