Nyaung U Airport (IATA: NYU) is the dedicated gateway to the Bagan archaeological plain — the UNESCO-inscribed 26-square-kilometre zone containing 2,000+ surviving Buddhist temples and stupas from the 11th-13th century Pagan kingdom. The airport sits 4 kilometres from Nyaung U town (the working market town at the northern edge of the plain) and 5 kilometres from the New Bagan hotel cluster at the southern edge. NYU runs domestic-only operations — connections from Yangon (RGN), Mandalay (MDL) and Heho (HEH) are the standard arrival pattern. Flight time from Yangon is 1 hour 15 minutes, from Mandalay 30 minutes. Most tourism arrivals cluster in the October-March dry season when the plain is at its most visitable.
The short airport-to-hotel transfers mean NYU arrivals are among the smoothest in the Myanmar circuit — 5 to 15 minutes from landing to hotel check-in for most properties. The airport's compact terminal handles 3-5 domestic arrivals per day in peak season with queues that are rarely significant. A pre-booked private driver meets you at the arrivals exit with a name sign and runs the short transfer at a locked USD fare. Most Bagan visitors book a multi-day driver hire starting with the NYU pickup and continuing through the temple sightseeing, balloon-flight coordination (pre-dawn pickup for dawn flights), Mount Popa day-trips, and the eventual return to NYU for onward flight. At the Airport
NYU's single-terminal operation is modest and functional — the arrivals building has a small baggage hall, customs (for rare international arrivals), and a ground-transport exit within 50 metres of the runway apron. Free Wi-Fi requires SMS verification. Currency exchange counter at arrivals at reasonable rates; ATMs accept Visa/Mastercard with moderate reliability. A basic café operates inside the terminal and there is no Priority Pass lounge. The ground-transport zone outside arrivals handles pre-booked pickups and a small rank of shared taxis. For arrivals on the morning flight from Yangon or Mandalay, the typical sequence is landing at 09:00-10:00, arrivals and baggage in 15-20 minutes, transfer to the hotel, and the Bagan archaeological zone entry-fee stop at the main entry point on the way.
