Amtrak Cascades is a genuinely nice ride and worth it if downtown-to-downtown works for you, but it runs on a fixed schedule, takes around three and a half hours, and still leaves you with a last-mile trip and your bags at both ends. Flying turns 40 minutes into a half-day once you count the airports. Driving yourself is three hours of I-5. The Portland to Seattle Drive: Route, Time & Traffic
The route. We take I-5 north out of Portland, across the Columbia River into Vancouver, Washington, up past Olympia and through Tacoma, and into Seattle. It’s roughly 175 miles and about three hours, though the Tacoma stretch and the approaches to both downtowns can add time at rush hour. Your driver watches conditions live and times the trip around the worst of the I-5 traffic.
