Getting from Venice Airport to Venice

Marco Polo sits on the mainland at the lagoon's edge, so reaching the island involves water at some point. The Alilaguna shared waterbus and private water taxis leave from the airport's own dock, while ATVO and ACTV buses run to Piazzale Roma, the road terminus at the island's edge. We drive the road leg, to Piazzale Roma or to a Mestre hotel, and from Piazzale Roma you continue by vaporetto or on foot, because cars cannot enter the historic centre at all.

What the transfer includes, and what it does not

The road journey is what we provide. Water taxis are a separate arrangement, priced by the operator, and we do not fold them into the quote. What we can do is drop you at the dock nearest your hotel and advise which connection makes sense, which is worth more than it sounds at a terminal where three different water services leave from different points.

Island hotel or mainland hotel?

The choice changes the shape of your arrival. Mestre hotels are reached door to door in about 15 minutes and cost noticeably less. Island hotels put you inside the city but add a water leg from Piazzale Roma, along with whatever walking the last bridges require. Neither is wrong, but booking an island hotel without planning the final connection is the single most common way an arrival in Venice goes badly.

Across the Veneto

Long-distance transfers run to Padua at about 45 km, Verona at about 110 km, and Treviso at about 30 km, all quoted the same way as the short hop into the city. These are ordinary fixed-price routes rather than excursions, which matters for anyone whose actual destination was never Venice: the region's conference venues, spa towns and vineyards are all closer to the airport than a rail connection through the city would suggest.

Late arrivals and early departures

Transfers operate at any hour, which is the practical argument here: the Alilaguna and the coaches both follow timetables that thin out in the evening, and a delayed landing can leave you at the airport with no onward service until morning.
